Halloween Salmon

A lone angler at the mouth of Chico Creek on Halloween day

The chum salmon I saw on my Halloween day bike ride weren’t wearing costumes or masks. Nor was any trick or treating in play unless they were using any special moves they know to swim past a hopeful fisherman at the mouth of Chico Creek (see photo). Note the lone salmon in the photo foreground. It’s on its way up the spawning trail in Kitsap County’s most prolific salmon stream.

Apparently, all it took was some recent rain to get the run started. Just a week or so ago Chico Creek was running low and without any salmon. On Halloween day, salmon were present in all of the usual great viewing spots, including near the bridges at Taylor Road, Northlake Way, Golf Club Hill Road, and Chico Way. The forecast calls for more rain later this week, and I hope the fall chum salmon run keeps building. That’s because Kitsap Salmon Tours is holding its guided walks and other activities this coming Saturday.
