This post honors my sister Marian, who would have been 78 today. A few years ago she sent me a pillowcase (see photo) that she embroidered with her favorite animals: cats. She probably thought I would use it in the guest bedroom, but right off I decided against that.
My sister was talented when it came to crafts like making collages and models. She also wrote poetry. But I had no idea she knew how to embroider. The work on the pillowcase is exquisite. Each cat has a different look and personality and yet somehow they all merge together perfectly as a group.
Because the pillowcase is too nice for guests or live cats, I decided to display it in a shadow box. At Michael’s, a craft store in Silverdale, there were several sizes to choose from, but none that matched its width exactly. So, true confession, I ended up going small instead of large. I think the result looks OK, but my sister was a bit disappointed. That’s because she embroidered five cats on the pillowcase not four. The fifth cat (sounds like a title for a spy novel) is forever hidden.
The shadow box is mounted on the wall in the bedroom at Treasure Island, so the pillowcase is safe from my cat, who loves to sack out just about anywhere but especially on pillows. It provides a great memory of my sister, and it’s in purrfect condition.
