A Green December

Strip mall sign: big sale at Reef Cannabis

During Black Friday and Cyber Monday retailers try to lure shoppers in with big sales and massive discounts. Reef Cannabis in Bremerton (see photo) also wants to cash in on the holiday shopping season. Reef is having a sale that lasts for the entire month. Perhaps the owners are hoping for a green December.

Reef Cannabis has a choice location—perhaps the best of any pot shop in Bremerton. It’s in a small strip mall at the corner of 11th Street and Callow Avenue in West Bremerton. 11th Street is a major arterial going into and out of downtown. Traffic on 11th is heavy all day long. When I’m in the mall’s parking lot, I’m extra careful as there’s a steady flow of cars going in and out.

Reef also has stores in Seattle’s Capitol Hil and Georgetown neighborhoods.

Reef’s neighbors in the mall include a 7-Eleven and a Little Caesar’s Pizza restaurant. Both were in the strip mall well before Reef and have no trouble attracting their own customers. But they surely get some spillover from Reef patrons who are planning ahead for the munchies that often follow smoking or vaping marijuana.

Until this week I didn’t know that pot stores have sales. Even with Reef’s great location, apparently it needs to. In Reef’s case, the discount is 30%. On their web site, Reef calls it a “Smokeout Sale.”

I haven’t been to Reef Cannabis for years. I shopped there a few times not long after it opened. The staff was knowledgeable, low pressure, and helpful to an old guy who needed to be shown several times how to operate a vaping pen. However, the product Reef (and other pot shops) sells is different from the pot I smoked in college and later tried to grow in an upstairs closet. It’s more potent, easier to get high on, and made me far less functional. So much so that I decided it wasn’t for me. That doesn’t mean I’m opposed to having a retail pot industry in Washington or might not visit Reef in the future. It just means I find other ways to relax.
