A Stream Runs Under It

The Chico stream house is partially hidden by several trees.

Perhaps the goal is to harmonize with nature. Or perhaps it’s to construct something that’s a bit different. Whatever the case, some houses get built in unusual locations: over creeks, near rivers, in trees, on tiny islands, into hillsides, and overlooking steep slopes. One such house—a house with a stream running under it—is located near me. Although you might not notice it when you drive by (see photo), I always stop to marvel at the stream house when I’m biking along Chico Way.

50 Years, Starting in Chico

Retail in front, apartment in back

It was fall 1975. Gerald Ford was president, Cincinnati’s Big Red Machine won the World Series, the Cold War was at its height, and the defense contractor I worked for opened an office in Silverdale in advance of the coming Trident boom. The photo shows the first place I rented in Kitsap County for more than a few weeks. It’s in Chico, across the street from Town & Country Auto Repair and just a few steps from Hank’s Grocery.

A New Business in Chico

What matters is what’s inside.

Creative Looks, a hair salon, opened in Chico this week. I know this because Cindy, the lady who cuts my hair, works there and today was haircut day. Chico is a small community on Chico Bay in Dyes Inlet northwest of Bremerton.

Coming in Spring 2010/11

Best of luck

The old sign announcing the Chico Beach Cottages said something like “Coming in Spring 2010” or “Available in Spring 2010.” Construction finally started a couple of weeks ago. The new sign (see photo) doesn’t mention the missed deadline, but a flyer available at the site states that completion is now targeted for Spring 2011. It also advises that only 5 of the 7 homes to be clustered on the roughly 1-acre site, which are priced from the mid-$500s, are left. I learned this on my bike ride today.

The waterfront project is located on the northwest side of Dyes Inlet, just before Chico Way dead ends into Newberry Hill Road, about a half-mile south of Silverdale. It’s a high-rent area due to the view and location. The home just to the north of the project is valued at more than $760,000 on the county tax rolls. I will miss the heavily wooded lot that’s been clear cut to make room for the cottages. But it will be interesting to see if the project can live up to its own marketing: “Once in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a new, legacy waterfront home in Kitsap’s first ‘pocket neighborhood’ cottage community!” More important whether the long-delayed construction start means local real estate professionals think Central Kitsap is emerging from the housing slump.

Did You Hear Any Salmon Today?

Chico Creek at the Taylor Road Bridge

Chico Creek at the Taylor Road Bridge

The fall chum salmon run is going to start soon. After a week of rain, stream flows are up, and the forecast (for salmon not weather) is for a good run this year. On my bike ride today I checked out Chico Creek, Central Kitsap’s most prolific salmon stream.
