North Shore Easter Decorations

Bunnies, chicks, eggs, and more

They decorate their property for Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day. Now another holiday can be added to the list. “They” is a family who owns a home on North Shore Road just west of Belfair State Park. In the past, I have seen spooks and goblins, Christmas ornaments, and hearts hanging from the trees along their road frontage.

When I posted the Valentine’s Day photo last month I wondered if the next set of decorations would be for St. Patrick’s Day. But instead of seeing shamrocks and leprechauns on a cold, wet bike ride yesterday, I noticed all things Easter (see photo) in the area that I call “holiday woods.” The only thing the Happy Easter message from Hood Canal’s North Shore needs is some warmer weather to go with it.

North Shore Valentine

Happy Valentine’s Day

From previous bike rides along the North Shore Road, I know that a family who owns property not far from Belfair State Park likes to decorate it for Halloween and Christmas. However, until today I didn’t know that they also put up a Valentine’s Day display (see photo). I’m not sure how long it’s been there as I seldom bike the North Shore Road this time of year. They probably didn’t beat local merchants though, who began showcasing Valentine’s Day items in the first week of January.

Now, I’m wondering what other days that we celebrate rate a display at what could be dubbed “holiday woods.” If we ignore the presidents, the next up is Saint Patrick’s Day. I will check back in late February or early March expecting to see shamrocks. Hopefully by then the weather will be good enough to rate at least a weekly bike ride along the Hood Canal.

North Shore Art

Taxi!

There’s always something interesting to see at the corner of Beck and North Shore Roads in Belfair. For one thing the owner is a car collector so in good weather you can usually catch a glimpse of some of the vehicles in his collection, which includes a beautiful 1955 Ford Crown Victoria. But old cars aren’t the only decorations in the big yard that’s across the street from Belfair State Park. On my bike ride today I noticed a new metal sculpture (see photo). It wasn’t named, so let’s go with “Balancing Act.” The torso is fashioned from an old water heater. The statue’s hard noggin looks familiar, but I can’t place it.

There’s another sculpture after the jump.

World’s Shortest Culvert?

No washouts expected here

I don’t know if the culvert shown in the photo is the world’s shortest, but it has to be a contender for the title. Roughly 14 inches in diameter and a bit over 3 feet in length, the corrugated metal pipe is only about 3 times as long as it is wide. The mini walkway the culvert supports provides a year-round dry crossing of the drainage ditch that lines Beck Road in Mason County near Belfair State Park. There’s a path through the greenbelt behind it to the property owner’s home.

I took the photo near the end of today’s bike ride after dodging rain showers all afternoon. If I had waited around, I might have seen the culvert in action as heavier rain moved in later and doused the area.

Evidence of Fall

Leaves on Roof

Leaves on roof

By the calendar fall is at its midpoint, and the maples in Western Washington have shed most, but not all, of their leaves. The photo shows what happens when a gently pitched roof is nearby. Ironically, the building in the picture is a maintenance shed at Belfair State Park. There are several improvement projects going on at the park, including work on the campsites that border Hood Canal and construction of a path along Big Mission Creek. The shed’s roof will probably need to wait until more of the leaves are down before it gets any attention.
