A Housing Project to Watch

Rocky Point Building Site

It looks like two lots are being combined.

Because I bike the length of Rocky Point Road almost every morning, I should spot any changes to its established homes and few remaining wooded lots right away. Not always so. On today’s ride I noticed a new housing start at the corner of Rocky Point Road and Water’s Edge Lane (see photo). Either delivery of the first load of building materials and site clearing have happened since Friday, or I’m not as observant as I thought.

There are two adjacent lots where the new house is going in. One fronts on Rocky Point Road and has the address 3074. The other fronts on Water’s Edge Lane and doesn’t have an address yet. While both lots have been cleared, the outline of the home’s foundation appears to be mostly on the Water’s Edge Lane lot. Road access will likely be from there. That makes sense because the driveway won’t need to cross the drainage ditch that runs along the edge of Rocky Point Road.

I have always wanted to build a new house. So far the closest I have come to this dream is replacing the carport at my old Rocky Point Road house with a new garage in 2005. The building site there was limited so the garage was a standard size: 24 feet by 24 feet. Had there been more room, I would have made it bigger.

I’m sure everyone who has ever thought of building a new house has a list of dream features no matter what their budget is. Mine include 10-foot ceilings, a covered deck, a walk-in shower, built-in everything, and a three-car garage. Yet the house wouldn’t have any wasted living space—except for the master bath—so as to keep energy costs low. It would also be on one level.

Back to reality. It will be fun watching the progress on the house project this spring and summer while imagining what features the new owners are dreaming about.
