A Three-Word “Awesome”

To offset a world that gets more bad news every year, The Book of Awesome by Neil Pasricha describes dozens of simple things that can make us happy and should be celebrated. For example, “When cashiers open up new checkout lanes at grocery stores.” The book’s entries are a mix of author originals and suggestions sent in from all over. One of them is the idea behind my favorite greeting card of all time.

First let’s give Pasricha his due. The titles communicate life’s little pleasures perfectly (for example, “When someone unjams the photocopier for you”). But he writes so well that reading about each happy moment is almost as good as experiencing it. Plus the book is LOL funny in places. After each entry makes its point, it ends with the word “AWESOME!” In addition to reading his books, you can also check out his blog at 100awesomethings.com.

I don’t send out a lot of greeting cards, but I know how hard it is to find the perfect one for an occasion that you trying to skate through by sending a card instead of showing up yourself. What’s especially maddening is that great cards, rare as fascinating commencement speeches, don’t seem to get recycled every few years. Doesn’t Hallmark poll its satisfied customers?

If you do find a good card you should buy several copies (if that’s possible) being careful not to send it to the same person twice. In the case of my favorite card, I sent one to my mother long ago and one to a friend. I haven’t seen it on the shelves since.

Pasricha titled his entry “When the vending machine gives you two things instead of one.” In it he talks about “Chocolate Justice” and how “you can’t return the free snack” so you might as well enjoy it. The card used two simple drawings instead.

On its cover a snake is standing in front of a vending machine deciding what to buy. For sale are treats that reptiles would enjoy—dead birds, rats, toads and frogs. It isn’t clear how he inserts a coin but he does, so you open the card. Miraculously two dead rodents have dropped into the out tray. “What a break,” the snake declares as he reaches for the prizes. OK, that’s a bit wordy by Pasricha’s standards but it is still “AWESOME!”

If the card ever reappears at your pharmacy, you can use it for just about any happy occasion.

  1. How you remember these things. Awesome.

  2. Anything above this, and the next year they would be $6.
