Elks Care

In case it rains

“Elks care, Elks share.” It’s a wonderful slogan and one that the Bremerton Elks lodge strives to live up to. Clearly some Elks also care strongly about their collector cars (see photo). Last Saturday at the 23rd annual Elks car show in Bremerton, a couple of owners pampered their entries by bringing along Quik Shade instant canopies. Given the off-and-on showers all weekend, the shelters weren’t there to keep the cars out of the sun.

I have only been to a couple of car shows in the rain. Bad weather tends to keep some collector cars and many fair-weather spectators like me away. But once they commit to a show, most owners live with the rain even if it means additional clean-up when the show is over. I have never seen anyone park a collector car under a canopy unless it was a trailer queen.

For the collector-car-challenged, the subject autos are a 1965 Rambler Model 770 and a 1938 Ford Delux. The Rambler has a V8 engine and a mint interior. The Ford is also in great condition, although the back seat needed minor upholstery work. Both cars were competing in stock categories.

The weather was cloudy but dry while I was at the show. There were showers later in the afternoon, so maybe the canopies did earn their keep. I didn’t stick around to find out. Thus I don’t know how these two rods with roofs fared in the class judging and in the people’s choice voting.

The Elks always put on a great show. It’s not a large show, but for its size you see a lot of variety with no single theme dominating. Plus it’s only about five miles from my house. Can’t wait for next year.
